Synopsis
The X-Men return to the states, but Banshee stays in Scotland with Moira. Upon entering the mansion the X-Men find Xavier is back and ready to lead the team again. Professor X identifies a new mutant and the X-Men go to recruit her. The Hellfire Club also tries to woo the young Kitty Pryde into their ranks.

Synopsis
Empress Lilandra transports the X-Men to her base so that Phoenix can be killed for her crime of wiping out an entire star system. Xavier explains that the Phoenix Force has been purged from Jean and demands the right to a duel of honor. The X-Men and the Imperial Guard fight on the Blue Area of the Moon to determine Jean's fate. During the battle, Dark Phoenix manifests herself once again and Jean sacrifices herself rather than let the Jean Grey-Phoenix symbiotic relationship continue.

Indexer Notes

The original story had Phoenix lose her powers and return to Earth. Jim Shooter intervened because he wanted more severe consequences for Phoenix's actions and so Claremont decides to kill her. The original version was later published in Phoenix #1 (April 1984).
