Indexer Notes

For this Gold Key reprint, Western Publishing provided a new “Mighty Mouse” logo, modified the original title from “Adventure of the Steel Slaves” to just “The Steel Slaves”, and produced its own coloring for this story.

In addition to those “standard Western modifications” routinely made to St. John reprints, several modifications have been made to the opening splash panel, both in configuration and dialogue.

Professor Edam’s initial dialogue balloon has been relocated from the upper right (St. John original) to the middle of the splash panel. The dialogue is also modified as follows:

“All right, Bradford, 3/1,000,000 of a degree more heat, reduce moisture by XYNR / # squared.” (St. John original)

“All right, Bradford, increase heat by three one-millionths of a degree, reduce moisture by XRn π2 ג3!” (Gold Key reprint)

The caption at the lower right is redrawn from a round-edged scroll to a standard rectangle. The caption text is also modified as follows:

“Chapter I It is a tense moment in the laboratories of the world-famous mouse-scientist, Prof. Edam. The next few seconds will tell whether the months of research spent on the top-secret project XYZ, have been a success or a failure!” (St. John original)

“It is a tense moment in Professor Edam’s laboratory. The next few seconds will tell whether the top-secret project XYZ, is a success or a failure!” (Gold Key reprint)
