Dot and her boyfriend Steve both get jobs in a new factory which opens in their town, but Steve receives a scholarship to university and quits. Dot fears Steve will forget about her or think she’s beneath him. Factory foreman Chuck constantly undermines her faith in Steve, and when Steve comes home on break and refuses to take a job in the factory, they break up. Dot later hears Steve is doing badly at school because he’s depressed. They reconcile: Dot agrees to wait to be married until Steve achieves his dream of graduating.
Veda becomes engaged to Steve on the rebound; he’s also just been jilted. They don’t love each other and decide to break their engagement. However, this decision makes them realize that they have fallen in love, after all.

Synopsis
Toby marries Dan after a whirlwind romance. Dan and his brother Frank are professional gamblers, and Toby enjoys the high life at first, but leaves Dan when he loses all of their money. Toby’s father urges her to get a job to occupy her time and she becomes a sales clerk. Her coworker Mollie is a widow who divorced her husband just before he was killed in the war. Toby seeks out Dan and discovers he’s stopped gambling and now owns a farm. They reconcile.
