Bess refuses her mother’s urging to date other boys, saying she has to remain available for Ben, and other boys would be “second-best” after him. Her parents set her up with Chet, the son of a friend. She remembers him as gawky and unattractive, but when he shows up for their date he’s handsome and charming and Bess realises her parents knew best.
