Per Peter Gillis to Frank Lovece on August 2, 2021 re: "The Incredible Hulk" #227: "Roger Stern and I had talked about moving decisively away from the Len Wein (and Steve Gerber in 'The Defenders') cuddly Hulk of Crackajack Jackson and beans, and towards a Hulk who’s an actual monster. Roger plotted the issue based, in part, on our discussions, and I scripted it — and then Roger rewrote parts of the script. The next issue [#228] has me as full co-writer, since I wrote the plot, Roger rewrote the plot, I wrote the script, and Roger rewrote that."
