The on-sale date of October 7 is from a promo in Howard the Duck Magazine #8. This date most likely reflects when copies of the newsstand edition were expected to be available. The direct-sale variant, i.e. the edition sold at most comics stores, would have been available two to four weeks earlier. The copyright registration publication date of September 16 most likely reflects when the direct-sale variant went on sale.
