Returning the Frankish king's court, Valda and Malagigi rest in a glade and recall how Valda came to be Baledor's prisoner before meeting Arak. It began when she was training with the other knights and a familiar rider named Creston approached. With his last dying breaths, Creston declared he had been killed by the arch-angel Michael.
