Hellboy first appeared in a story in San Diego Comic-Con Comics (Dark Horse, 1992 series) #2 (August 1993), given away at the convention, and was seen in John Byrne's Next Men (Dark Horse, 1992 series) #21 (December 1993) as a fictional character a few months before this miniseries was released.

- Synopsis
- Hellboy arrives at Cavendish Hall, to find out more about the Arctic expedition, with two fellow BPRD Agents -- the pyrokinetic Liz Sherman and amphibious humanoid Abe Sapien. The trio interviews the family matriarch, after which Abe investigates underwater, Liz disappears, and Hellboy battles another frog creature before being confronted by Rasputin.

- Synopsis
- Liz's energy is drained by Rasputin to channel through Sadu-Hem and free the Ogdru-Jahad as Hellboy battles the frog creature's numbing hold. An untold distance away, the assault on the Seven Beasts' tombs is being incredulously monitored by an alien race. While Abe, spurred on by the spirit of Elihu Cavendish, mortally wounds Rasputin and Liz's power proves too much for him to contain, it falls to Hellboy to face the wizard in final battle.
