Spurs Jackson and Strong Bow go on a mission to investigate explosions seen on the moon, leaving Hank Roper to meet a group of costumed science fiction fans invited by Spurs for a nearby local convention. Expecting the fans to show up in costume and an airplane mocked-up to appear like a rocket ship, Hank is surprised when a real alien from Neptune named Jawa shows up instead. Jawa is an artopod, as are his crew of scouts preparing for an invasion of Earth. Hank must think quickly to outwit Jawa and his insectoid friends.
Spurs Jackson collects and explains the alien creature called the Saturlope. Saturlopes live on the moonlets that compose the rings of Saturn, and eat the only food source available there-mineral rocks.
