Captain America [Steve Rogers]; Nick Fury; THEM (secretly A.I.M., really a division of HYDRA)
Synopsis
While Cap is in the middle of training, Nick Fury turns up looking for info on a secret organization known as "THEM". A strange flying craft lands outside Avengers Mansion, and a chemical android attacks. In a remote lab, members of "THEM" observe by remote camera, while watching over a "battalion" of androids growing like plants in a glass-enclosed hydroponic garden, due to experiments with D.N.A. Cap and Fury barely manage to stop the android. Fury tells Cap it's SHIELD's job, and to stay out of it. But he gives Cap a SHIELD "Priority A-1" badge to make getting in touch easier in the future.
When Hank designs a new power to add to his Giant-Man repertoire (the ability to grow and shrink things other than himself at will), Jan decides it is high time to create a new costume for him as well.
Thor [Doctor Donald Blake]; Cobra [Klaus Vorhees] (introduction, origin); Jane Foster; Doctor Bruce Andrews; Odin; Professor Shecktor (introduction, death)
Synopsis
While visiting India, Don Blake finds that one of his old teachers has been murdered by a villain who gained the power of a snake. Thor fights the Cobra in New York and defeats him, after Jane Foster sees her new boss's cowardice and goes back to Doctor Blake.
A movie producer's next film is a sci-fi picture featuring a giant robotic monster. Bad press convinces him to abandon the project but just as he's about to disassemble the robot, an alien invasion fleet lands. He sends the robot lumbering towards them and they ineffectively fire their nerve weapons at it. Next, they try gas, which of course has no effect on the machine either. Panicked, they flee to their saucers resolving never to return. People express their sympathy to the movie producer that all that money was spent with nothing to show for it, but he knows better.
