- Synopsis
- A young Louis Armstrong and his mother are new arrivals in New Orleans in 1914. His mother encourages Louis to play his horn at an outdoor event, but he doesn't want to because it is raining. Joe Oliver (then called the King of Jazz) encourages Louis, and he does play his horn. As he plays, the rain stops and the sun comes out.
The first three pages are completely done in muted shades of greenish-gray. The fourth page, as Louis starts to play, is also the muted greenish-gray color, with just a few spots of color on the last rain drops reflecting the emerging sunlight. The last two pages are in full color.

- Ol' Scratch, hiding in the body of a woman named Katrina and wearing a blue dress in a honky tonk bar, takes Stackalee's hat and challenges him. Stackalee resists, and other patrons of the honky tonk help Stackalee drive Ol' Scratch away. When Ol' Scratch later brings the hurricane called Katrina to New Orleans, Stackalee protects the honky tonk from the worst of the storm.

- Synopsis
- In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and older man watches the news and listens to the reports. He goes for a walk, and sees a street musician listening to the news on a radio while his saxophone sits beside him. The older man asks to borrow the saxophone, and then begins to play jazz music, and the street musician turns off his radio to listen to the jazz music and other passersby also begin to gather and listen to the music.
This is the only story in the book that does not have a filler page between it and the preceding story.
