Indexer Notes

Paul Levitz explains the origin of comic books and Detective Comics in particular. Includes illustrations from Detective Comics #27 Cover (Batman), #1 (Slam Bradley), #64 (Boy Commandos), and #20 (Crimson Avenger).

This introduction notes that this collection includes the first stories of many characters who were born in the pages of Detective Comics, including Slam Bradley. However, while other characters had their first appearances included in this collection, Slam Bradley's first appearance from Detective Comics #1 is not included. Originally the solicitations for this collection indicated that it would include the first Slam Bradley story, but the story was pulled before printing due to concerns of racial stereotypes portrayed in that story. The Slam Bradley story from Detective Comics #27 is included here in its place. It appears that this introduction was written before the decision was made to not include the first Slam Bradley story, and the Slam Bradley panel reprinted here is from Detective Comics #1, not #27.
