Issue Notes

Ernie Pike was created by Hector Oesterheld the famous Argentinian screenwriter and by Hugo Pratt at the time of their Argentine collaboration. Pratt lent Pike the features of his writer accomplice. This war reporter character was inspired by the famous and celebrated American war correspondent Ernie Pyle (1900-1945) (he received the Pulitzer Prize in 1944). He owes this popularity to the fact of telling the stories of the soldiers simply and with a lot of empathy.
When the Second World War broke out, Pyle became a military correspondent and went with the American army. Thus, during the summer of 1944, he followed the American troops of Omaha Beach to the liberation of Paris. He died on April 18, 1945, hit by an enemy bullet, during the Battle of Okinawa, an island near Japan.
The series begins in May 1957 in the number 1 of the Argentine monthly "Hora Cero", with the episode "Francs-tireurs" ("Francotiradores"). Pratt draws 16 episodes in the magazines "Hora Cero" monthly, "Hora Cero" weekly, "Hora Cero Extra".
In the years 1957-59, Pratt also drew 10 war stories without the character of Ernie Pike. 8 of these stories have been repeated, mixed with the 16 episodes "Ernie Pike", in the Italian monthly Sgt Kirk, published between 1967 and 1975, or in all 24 stories.
It is these 24 stories that are included in the complete edition published by Glénat in 1984, the reissue of 1994 having «forgotten» one ("A dangerous adventure" (10 p.)) voluntarily, at the request of Hugo Pratt.
This book is an augmented complete edition of the series "Ernie Pike: Chroniques de guerre" in 3 volumes (Glénat, 1979-1981).
