- While I strove for historical accuracy in this book, there are some details of the story that are compressed for dramatic reasons.

- Synopsis
- After taking part in two failed expeditions, Shackleton mounts a major effort to cross Antarctica and reach the South Pole. When his ship Endurance becomes ice-locked, then breaks up after ten months, Shackleton leads his men on a five-month journey by ice, land, and sea to Elephant Island. From thence with a handful of men he sails a small boat 800 miles to South Georgia, climbs a mountain range, and crosses the island on foot to get help. Four months after leaving Elephant he returns with the rescue ship. He brings every member of his expedition safely home.
