Synopsis
During the Great Depression, Frank works as a bell boy at the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, and also helps his uncle sell apples on the street. Theresa is a maid at the Waldorf, and is also a player at the Federal Theatre Negro Unit in Harlem. Frank panics when gangster Jack Helman checks in -- he owes Jack $400 from a poker game. He's also smitten with Nina Booth when she checks in.

Synopsis
When Mrs. Pendleton loses a valuable jewel-studded collar for one of her dogs, she viciously attacks the innocent Theresa. Nina Booth defends Theresa, and makes sure that she does not suffer any repercussions from the hotel. But Theresa is perplexed as to why Nina favors her so.

Synopsis
Theresa discovers that Nina has been stealing jewelry in the hotel. Theresa and Frank decide that he will fence the items she has now stolen from Nina, and they will split the take. Frank brings Theresa's share to her after the rehearsal of Voodoo Macbeth in Harlem. Since he is white, other cast members regard him with suspicion.

Synopsis
Frank and Theresa plan to steal the rest of Nina's loot, but Theresa overhears that Frank's fence was actually a police plant, and the police are closing in. After a confrontation in Jake Helmer's room, Nina, Frank and Theresa decide to join forces, and to flee together. As their taxi rushes past, Frank tosses Uncle Pack his bell boy's cap, filled with cash.
