Donald Dale Milne | Dwayne - Several Sequences - Characters - until we get Character tables and relations sorted out, it is useful to retain the Earth-1 and Earth-2 information. We will need that when splitting up characters. - Don |

Dwayne Best | we have been taking out those designations for several years as they were considered to be tracking continuity | 2015-03-19 17:08:56 | Editing | Under Review
Donald Dale Milne | Well, I agree that some of the designations are unnecessary and would just track continuity. However, there was a time when you could have two different Wonder Women or Supermen in a story, so some way to differentiate them is needed. I don't remember that we were simply removing them all and I don't think that's helpful. As I noted, we will need them when we try to split the characters into proper Character tables. So it us useful to retain them now or they will have to be re-entered later. For these reasons, I don't think we should remove them all at this time. Would you like me to put this in discussion for the other editors to comment? - Don |
2015-03-20 01:05:08 | Under Review | Under Review
Dwayne Best | Without opening it up to needless discussion, please explain your reasoning a bit further. If you are thinking that an "(Earth-2)" following a character name will somehow eventually allow the character to be sorted into the correct slot in a table, that may or may not be true. However, by that logic, several of the characters listed here would need such designations and they don't have them. The "(all Earth-2 / Earth-1)" designations after the team names are not going to be particularly helpful for any kind of automatic sorting. I have no interest in adding such designations after each character that might need it. The Justice League characters are all Earth-1 and the Justice Society characters are all Earth-2, so for the purposes of this index (and each and every other issue in this series that I have previously cleaned up), the characters are already defined. |
2015-03-20 23:05:52 | Under Review | Under Review
Donald Dale Milne | Yeah, I didn't really want to open this up for a lot of needless discussion either, which is why I asked first. Thanks for keeping it here for now. First, I did not intend to ask you to add any new designations. No one needs to add info to the Characters field, it's all optional. My thinking is driven by discussions we are currently having on the Characters committee. It appears we are moving toward a system where we will list the many various "Wonder Woman" characters (for example) each as a separate character, with some sort of data attached to allow folks to choose which one to use in a given story. One type of data which is helpful because of the way the characters were created and marketed is the "Earth-X" designation. Since we already have this data for some characters, it can be found and used by a program and no one will need to re-enter it. I realize it is not always present, so some will need to be added. So really all I was asking was, if we have that data, please do not delete it yet. It may be that you've successfully removed it in the past, and that may be because its value was not recognized. Now that we are discussing using it, I believe it has value. I can see now that in this index, since all the Justice Society characters are Earth-2, that designation may not be needed. (Though at some point, Justice Society characters are not all Earth-2, bringing confusion back in.) That said, I'll approve this because of your noting that all the Justice Society characters are Earth-2 in this index, so they could be easily reconstructed without re-entry. I am worried that we may miss that in the future though. - Don |
